Perfumo Canyon Ridge.

On top of the world, we rode north on See Canyon Road along Perfumo Canyon Ridge. It was good that we wore full-face helmets, as our mouths were constantly agape and would have collected pollen and possibly bugs. The beauty surrounding us had a mythical quality that made me anticipate unicorns, pegasi, and phoenixes. I felt anything could happen as we made our way to the Pacific Coast Highway.

Riding through Big Sur, on our way to our next Hipcamp I was delighted to find the curves and bends of PCH much less terrifying (and tear-inducing) than they had been on my first motorcycle ride here. I could not have been happier. We viewed elephant seals at San Simeon and watched humpback whales breech near Big Sur. (Whale watching from the motorcycle is ill-advised; we stopped often.)

We rode across the Bixby Creek Bridge. One of the most photographed bridges in California, it is 714 feet long, (only!) 24 feet wide, and 280 feet above the canyon floor. When constructed in 1932, it was the longest concrete arch span on the California State Highway System. With sheer cliffs on the right and nothing but southbound traffic and a death plunge into the sea on the left, 714 feet was plenty long for me.
